JEJCS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR 2003 – 04, SEPTEMBER 2004

  1. STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS:

    • 254 students were continuously enrolled in JEJCS during the 2003-04 school year.

    • 74% JEJCS students qualified for free or reduced lunch

    • Average family income was $29,191 and the median $26,800

    • Average tuition was $79.14 per month per family and $54.27 per student per month (median = $50.00).

    • Spanish was the family language for 59% of children; English for 29%, 12% spoke both languages with their families.

    • 96% of students were Hispanic, 1% African American, 2% White, and 1% of mixed ethnicity.

    • One hundred fifty-eight of the 207 possible students (76%) in K through 6th had attended JEJCS for three or more years.
       
  2. GOALS FOR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: READING COMPETENCY

    1. After attending JEJCS for three years, 90% will read at or above grade level.
       
      • 82% read at or above grade level
         
    2. After attending JEJCS for three years, 90% will pass TAKS Reading.

      • Eighty-five of the long-tenured students (88%) passed the reading portion of the TAKS test.
         
    3. After attending JEJCS for three years, 60% will score in the top one-half on standardized achievement tests in Reading.

      • 63% of students scored in the top half on ITBS Reading
         
    4. After attending JEJCS for three years, 90% will pass TAKS Writing.

      • All fourth graders at JEJCS took the Writing portion of the TAKS test, and every student passed.
         
  3. GOALS FOR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: MATH COMPETENCY

    1. After attending JEJCS for three years, 90% will pass the Math portion of the TAKS.

      • 96% passed the Math portion of TAKS.

      • 89% of JEJCS students passed both the Reading and Math portions of TAKS.
         
    2. After attending JEJCS for three years, 60% will score in the top one-half on standardized achievement tests in Math.

      • 76% of the children who had attended JEJCS three or more years scored in the top half of the ITBS in Math
         
  4. GOALS FOR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: LANGUAGE COMPETENCY

    1. Spanish-speaking children will demonstrate 20 months or more gain in English language comprehension and expression during their first year in the JEJCS early childhood program.

      • In approximately nine months, Spanish-speaking Threes gained an average of 14.5 months in auditory comprehension and 12.9 months in expressive communication. Language assessment procedures changed this year for PreK students, and we were unable to obtain this information. However, PreK classes for the past 5 years have met or exceeded the goal.

      • All Kindergartners, regardless of family language, read at or above grade level.
         
    2. Language Scores on the ITBS Achievement Test in Language

      • 72% of all students scored in the top half of the ITBS test in Language Achievement.
         
  5. PARENT PARTICIPATION IN THE SCHOOL:

    1. More than 95% of parents express satisfaction with JEJCS services.
       
      • 99% of parents stated that they were satisfied with the education that their children received at JEJCS

      • 98% were satisfied with the manner in which they (parents/families) were treated

      • 100% of parents would recommend JEJCS to others.
         
    2. Parent Involvement
       
      • 92% of JEJCS families met the meal service requirement.

      • Parents of all but one student participated in two or more conferences with JEJCS staff during the school year.

      • Monica Arellano (Family Guidance Coordinator) visited each student’s home for an average of 6.6 times over the school year
         
    3. Parents’ Roles in Children’s Learning
       
      • All but one child’s parents (Threes – Kindergarten) read to their child once per week or more, and about two-thirds read to their young child every day.

      • Sixty-four PreK – 6th grade students (28% of students) received Red Folder support for part or all of the 2003-04 year. Teachers and administrators discussed specific support strategies with 75% of those students’ parents at least once during the year.
         
    4. Student average daily attendance will exceed 95%.
       
      • Average daily attendance for all students who were enrolled at the end of school was 98%.
